Dick DeVos is the eldest son of Richard DeVos, the co-owner of Amway Corporation. The Amway Corporation distributes its household, personal care products, and health products through network sales.
DeVos started his career in Amway Corporation where he held different positions in the company’s operating department. In 1984, DeVos was named Amway’s Vice President in 18 countries to gain more experience. Nonetheless, he left the company in 1984 to start The Windquest Group, a company specializing in the manufacturing and marketing of closet organizers and storage. In 1991, Dick DeVos was appointed by his father to manage his family’s basketball club, Orlando Magic Basketball franchise. While leading Orlando Magic Football, DeVos remained the Managing Director of Windquest Group.
Two years later, Mr. DeVos succeeded his father as Amway’s President. Leveraging his extensive experience in managing Amway’s subsidiaries in 18 countries, Dick DeVos initiated the restructuring of the company’s operations and structure. He established Alticor Corporation as an umbrella firm for Access Business, Amway Corporation, and Quixtar Corporation. Under Alticor Corporation, Amway extended its functions to over 50 countries and six continents. In 2002, Dick DeVos left Alticor to concentrate his efforts on his private firm, the Windquest Group, and politics.
In 2006, Dick DeVos ran for Governor in Michigan State on the Republican ticket. Unfortunately, he lost to the Democrats by a slight margin. At the time when he was entering politics, DeVos was considered as the wealthiest man to contest for Michigan’s governorship. In the quest for the governorship, DeVos spent over $40 million to fund his campaign. However, his wealth proved of no help as he lost to Jennifer Granholm. Dick DeVos’ Family
Dick DeVos is married to Elizabeth Prince, the daughter of the founder of Prince Corporation in Michigan, Edgar Prince. Elizabeth’s brother, Erik Prince, served as the president of North Carolina-based private security firm, Blackwater Corporation. Additionally, Erik Prince supported the U.S military to accomplish its mission in Iraq. DeVos and Elizabeth have four children namely Ryan, Rick, Andrea, and Elissa.
Dick DeVos holds a degree in BA from the University of Northwood. Throughout his career, DeVos has earned several accolades including honorary doctorates from Northwood University. Most recently, he received distinguished alumni recognition from the University of Northwood.
Dick DeVos supports several humanitarian initiatives through his Grand-Rapids humanitarian organization. Dick and Betsy DeVos Foundation offers financial aid to religious, civic, educational, and artistic organizations since 1990. Its grantees include Mars Hill Bible Church, ArtPrize Grand Rapids, Calvin College, and West Michigan Aviation Academy.
