Small Molecule, Big Effect

But what if there was a means to stop that, even reverse it? Well researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, are currently working on just that, a small molecule drug that ‘perks up’ old stems cells in both the brain and in muscle. David Schaffer, director of the Berkeley Stem Cell Center said. “We established that you can use a single small molecule to rescue essential function in not only aged brain tissue but aged muscle.” The new drug interferes with the production of transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-beta1), which accumulates over time and ages the cells. TGF-beta1 not just responsible for the aging of cells, it is also responsible for swelling. The new drug would stop this from happening, creating a ‘younger’ cell.
