Artificial intelligence is a very exciting field of scientific and technological research and development. It is also a very scary one as Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple, reminds us. He recently joined a growing chorus of intelligent and accomplished voices warning of the future day when humanity inadvertently supersedes itself by creating machines more intelligent than us.
Bruce Karatz is aware that machines killing people or wiping out humanity althogether has been a popular theme in science-fiction from “West World” with Yul Brenner to the original and remake of “Battlestar Galactica” in which virtually an entire civilization is wiped out by machines that, in the remake at least, humanity created. This is definitely one of the ways we could go extinct someday. Our only chance may be, as futurist and inventor Ray Kurzweil has detailed, to merge with machine intelligence in order to enhance our own. He actually foresees this as the only way for humanity to keep up when change begins to happen at such a rapid pace that humans not enhanced in such a way will just keep falling farther behind. I just hope it takes the positive path that Kurzweil and some others have put forth and not a dark turn such as us becoming something akin to the Borg from “Star Trek: The Next Generation.”
The world of science fiction just merged into reality a little more. Boeing has taken out a patent on what could be the first step to force fields. The technology is called shockwave attenuation via electromagnetic arc and uses lasers to lessen the shockwave of explosions. The technology does not protect against shrapnel, but most military vehicles are armored anyway.
The explanation and diagrams that can be seen here explains how sensors will detect the explosion near the devise. This will activate the lasers to heat up the water or air between the vehicle and the explosion and form a plasma barrier. This barrier will deflect and negate the blast effect of the explosion.
A personnel carrier will have its shield activated by a roadside explosion that a tank’s sensors would be able to ignore. Brian Torchin has learned that the plan is to have a computer database that contains records of different bomb signatures attached to the sensors to determine the threat level and effect needed.
Amazon is still far from being able to use their drones to deliver your purchases, but the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced Thursday that Amazon has been granted a certificate that allows the company to fly their aircraft without crew – with limitations.
According to the FAA, Amazon will receive an experimental certificate so they can do “research, development and training of flying objects”.
Amazon will also have to provide to the FAA flight data.
As the folks at Imaging Advantage understand it, among the information required by the government are the number of flights flown, hours pilots flew the drones, any unexpected failures, and moments that pilots did not follow the instructions of the control towers.
Amazon announced that it was investigating the possibility of using drones to deliver purchases in December 2013, but has met with resistance from the FAA . However, the FAA presented its regulations in February.
Apple has invested $50 million in helping to get more minorities working in tech. Rather than going to just one group, the money is going to be dispersed to several different organizations designed to help minorities pursue technical careers. Intel made a similar large donation last year.
$40 million of the donation from Apple will go to the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, a fund that helps support students in historically african-american colleges. The other $10 million is going to the National Center for Women and Information technology (NCWIT). That group works to encourage women to pursue 4-year degrees in technology.
Late last year, CEO Tim Cook pledged to try and improve the company’s diversity, which Twitter users say that they have done.
